Tigers fall to Red Raiders, defeat Yellowjackets

The Mount Vernon High School Varsity Tigers Baseball team split their games this last week with a loss to Winnsboro on Friday and a win against Mineola on Tuesday night.

The Tigers lost the game against the Red Raiders to end with a 3-2.The game was scoreless until Winnsboro put one in the bottom of the fourth followed by two in the fifth. Mount Vernon’s scores came in the fifth and sixth innings.

Cade Monroe went two for three at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits. Monroe singled on a ground ball to third base, then stole second and third bases. He scored on a line drive by Mason Pope to left field to tie the game at one.

Mount Vernon’s other score came when Brylon Bolin singles to right field to score Landon Moss from second base on the throw. The Tigers left two on base that inning.

Halen Miller pitched for the Tigers surrendering three runs on four hits in six and two-third innings on the hill. He struck out three and walked one.

The Tigers took the lead in the fourth inning and kept it the rest of the game to win 5-4 over the Mineola Yellowjackets.

Mineola led the game in the first inning with two runs to Mount Vernon’s one. The lead was short lived as Mount Vernon Came back to score two in the second inning to Mineola’s one to tie the game at three. The Tigers scored a run in the fourth inning. Both teams scored one more run each in the sixth inning.

Kam Doss walked, then advanced to third on a double by Bolin to right field. Doss then scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead. The final Tiger run came with two out. Monroe singled a line drive to center field followed by stealing second and third. Doss scored on an error by the Mineola pitcher to bring the game to the final score, 5-4.

Tyler Reynolds got the win on the mound for the Tigers. He allowed four runs on eight hitts and struck out four. Ryder Bowers threw one inning in relief.

Bolin, Doss, and Bower all had two hits to lead the Tiger hitting. Monroe had five stolen bases with a total of 11 steals for the team.

The varsity Tigers will host Quitman’s Bulldogs Friday March 6, and travel to Chapel Hill Tuesday, March 11. Both JV and Varsity teams will play at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. both nights, respectively.
