Body

George Foster Brown, Jr. passed away on April 4, 2023 after suffering several strokes, at the age of 84. He was born on November 30, 1938 in Dallas, TX to George Foster and Jean (Squires) Brown.

George grew up in Gainesville, FL, Jackson, MS and Amarillo, TX. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1956. After attending Amarillo College and the University of Texas at Austin, George went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in South Korea, where he remained to work for Univac.

Following his return to the states to be closer to family, George worked several computer technical jobs in New Jersey and Texas. He then settled in the family home on Lake Winnsboro. It was here that George honed his expert gardening skills and a true green thumb was born! He maintained a beautiful and bountiful vegetable garden, enjoyed by family and friends alike. He also enjoyed boating and fishing on Lake Winnsboro and in the creek bordering the homestead.

George was a quick-witted man with a genius IQ and was a life-long learner. He loved to read non-fiction books and study history. George also enjoyed games and loved organizing groups for a card or board game. This brought much joy to his nieces and nephews when they were young, although he typically won the games. He was also a formidable poker player.

In his later years, George was a proud member of the HAWKS Gun Club of East Texas where he enjoyed the fellowship of the other members and worked on promoting 2nd Amendment rights and gun safety. He voluntarily maintained the HAWKS website as Web Master and wrote a monthly newsletter for club members. In 2018, he was awarded HAWK of the Year.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George Foster and Jean Brown. He is survived by his sisters Anne Kellogg (Arthur) and Jeanie Glasscock (Gary), Nieces, Amy Cadenhead Lickteig (Chris) and Mandi Schilling (B.J.), Nephews, Britt Chriesman, Brooks Chriesman (Jessica) and Kyle Glasscock (Lindsey), and Great Niece, Jayme Lickteig.

George loved spending time with family and left a special gift of Super 8 home family movies that he shot in the 1960’s thru 1980’s.

The family would like to thank the care-givers and staff of Rock Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation in Sulphur Springs, and Heritage Home Health and Hospice of Sulphur Springs … particularly Dawn Bogrand and Cody Rushing.

A memorial service will be held on June 12 at the family lake house, 439 CR 4845 in Winnsboro at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of East TX or Heritage Hospice of Sulphur Springs.
