The Mount Vernon High School Varsity Softball team split games this week with a win against Quitman Friday and a one point loss to Hooks Tuesday. The team has a 7-2 district record and a 19-9-1 record for the season. This puts the Tigers in second place in the district behind Winnsboro and ahead of Mineola.

The Tigers were on the wrong end of a 9-8 loss to Hooks Tuesday. The game tied at eight when Hooks came back to score one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mount Vernon was behind five runs in the fourth inning, but drove back scoring five runs. Providing the drive was a double from Summer Rogers, a single by Kamryn Bolin, a fielder’s choice by Olivia Baird, and a groundout by Ashtyn Redar. Mount Vernon tied things up in the top of the fifth with Redar’s groundout to bring in one run.

Alexa Taylor took the loss for the Tigers, going three and a third innings allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out five and allowing no walks.

Mount Vernon walked over the Lady Dawgs for an 8-1 win Friday evening, April 7. The Tigers opened with two runs in the first inning, a single run in both the third and fourth inning and finished with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Summer Rogers homered in the first inning bringing in two runs. Rogers, Carsyn Sparks, Kamryn Bolin and Olivia Baird powered the fifth inning with RBIs.

It was a 10 hit game with Cameron Pope, Rogers, Baird, and Sparks each getting two apiece. Norwood and Bolin accounted for the other two.

Taylor took the win, The left handed pitcher went seven innings, allowing one rung on three hits, striking out nine and walking one.

The Tigers will travel to Chapel Hill for their games Friday, April 14, and will host Winona for a game on Tuesday, April 18. Both games will start at 6 p.m. However, the Tuesday evening game will double as Senior Night for the team. Celebrations to honor the members of the team who will graduate this Spring will begin about 5:45 p.m.
