Raider Boys take Varsity, JV District T&F Crowns

The Red Raider varsity boys track team captured the District 13-3A crown for the first time since 2008. The Winnsboro team amassed 185 points, well ahead of second-place Harmony with 101 and third-place Mount Vernon with 92. Quitman was fourth with 85 points followed by Winona (81), Mineola (51), and MP Chapel Hill (22).

The JV boys equaled the feat with an even larger point margin with 237 points. Mineola finished second with 120.

The varsity girls had a share of outstanding performances; however, they do not field competitors in every event. They placed fifth with 60 points behind Mineola (144), Quitman (134), Harmony (127.5), and Mount Vernon (124.5). The JV girls placed third with 28 points.

Athletes who earned top four finishes will advance to the April 19 Area Meet where they will face competitors from District 14 with a goal to capture a regional berth. The Region 2 meet takes place April 27-28 at Whitehouse’s Wildcat Stadium.

AREA QUALIFIERS Hayden Deaton took first in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 11 inches, a distance that set a personal best and a new Winnsboro high school record. The senior placed second in long jump (20-11.5) and high jump (5-10).

Nico Payne grabbed a top finish in the high jump (5-10), plus a third-place finish in long jump (20-5) and fourth place in triple jump (43-4.5).

Angel Hernandez was a standout in the throwing disciplines with gold-medal performances in discus (1430.5) and in shot put (44-4). Landon Boyd earned silver in shot put (43-9.75).

Distance runners David Soto and Brandon Dunavant excelled with Soto winning the 3200-meter run (9:54), 1600 (4:23), and 800 (1:57). Dunavant earned bronze in the 3200 (10:27) and 1600 (4:39); he was fourth in the 800 (2:05).

Aidan Fitch punched an area ticket with a fourthplace finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.55). Kyler Finney took bronze in the 300 hurdles (41.51).

Camden Capehart placed fourth in the 200 (22.63) and is a member of the 800-meter relay that placed second. Capehart is joined by Cristian Sanchez, Jacob Russell, and Tristian Smajstrla.

Also making the trip to Area will be the second-place 400-meter relay team with Smajstrla, Russell, Payne, and Sam Sheffield. The thirdplace 1600-meter relay team brings together Smajstrla, Russell, Finney, and Jerik Joyner.

Sol Torres was a standout for the varsity girls with top finishes in the 100 (12.92) and 200 (26.67), and a second-place berth in long jump (16-2.75). Torres also anchored the 400-meter relay that placed third (51.85) with Nuriyah Burns, Halle Deaton, and Kaitlyn McAdoo.

Ky’Lee Nichols earned third in the 300 hurdles (50.75).

In field events, Faith Acker is district champ in shot put (36-0), and Halle Deaton qualified for area in the high jump (4-6).
