Softball team edged out by Winnsboro, wins against Mineola

The Mount Vernon High School Varsity Tiger Softball team were edged out 11-10 by the Lady Raiders Friday and won handily over the Yellowjackets Tuesday.

The Mount Vernon Varsity Tigers took an early lead and maintained their position throughout the game against Mineola April 4. The teams scored one apiece in the first inning. Mount Vernon scored two in the second,fourth and sixth innings and one in the seventh. The Yellowjackets scored one in the sixth inning and two in the seventh.

Olivia Baird scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning. A sacrifice bunt by K.K. Scally scored a run for the Tigers and a second was scored on an error in the second inning.

The varsity Tigers tallied 14 hits with Summer Rogers, Cameron Pope, Kamryn Bolin and Pacey Ford collecting two hits each to lead the Mount Vernon team.

The Mount Vernon team committed no errors in the field with Ford having the most chances with four.

Alexa Taylor was on the mound for the Tigers. She allowed eight hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Varsity Lady Tigers were close to a comeback from a four run fifth inning. They were short after managing six runs in the comeback effort. Ashtyn Redar and Summer Rogers each helped with RBIs.

Both teams scored a single run in the first inning. Mount Vernon scored two in the third, but fell behind with Winnsboro scoring four that same inning. They again had a matching run scored in the fourth. Mount Vernon came back strong in the fifth. A home run by Ashtyn Redar tied the game in the fifth inning on a 2-1 count to score four runs. They held the Raiders to two.

Tied at eight apiece, the teams went head to head in the seventh with the Tigers scoring two and Winnsboro scoring three to close the game. Mount Vernon’s scores in the seventh came on a single by Natalie Norwood to advance Cameron Pope to second, who also singled, and Summer Rogers triples on a flyball to left field scoring Norwood and Pope.

Alexa Taylor started as pitcher for Mont Vernon. The lefthander went five innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and striking out eight. Grayson Hammonds threw two innings in relief.
