Eighteen of this year’s sixth and seventh grade students at Mount Vernon Middle School were selected to serve as the MVMS Cheer team for the 2023-24 school year. The names of 33 young ladies were announced this past week as having been selected to represent MVISD on their high school and middle school cheer squads for the 202324 school year.

There were 18 girls named to both the high school and middle school cheer squads and seven named to the high school junior varsity cheer squad. Each team member must meet all University Interscholastic League requirements for participation and maintain grade point averages throughout the school year. In addition, they must adhere to the MVISD’s Cheerleading Guide for Conduct. Parents and guardians must agree to these terms as well prior to the tryouts in a show of skills closed to everyone except judges, principals, tabulators and coaches.

“Since we are getting to start out the cheer season together and make a plan for next year, I am confident the 2023-24 school year will be a great one,” said Cheer Coach/Sponsor Sawyer Cunningham. “Keri Barnes [middle school cheer coach & high school cheer colaborator] brings a lot to the cheer program. I am excited for the direction we are going.”

Team members are listed by squad, with current grade levels, and parents’ names. The MVHS Junior Varsity, all currently eighth grade students are: Sadie Burns - Kristin Giggleman and Heath Burns, Kember Cunningham - Chad and Sawyer Cunningham, Lilly Ann Ellis - Steve and Kristy Ellis, Elly Hedges Rob and Beth Hedges, Kate Jordan - Josh and Kayce Jordan, Briahna Walker -Jamil and Brittany Traylor, and Shiloh Winters - April and Jody Brown.

The MVHS Varsity Cheer team includes ninth grade students: Morgan Fountain - J.C. Fountain, Jr and Dalecia Fountain, Emmersyn Reed - Michael and meredith Reed, Teagan Trantham - Dusty and Ashley Tranthan; tent grade students: Olivia Baird Kristy Baird, Avery Burns - Kristin Giggleman ad Heath Burns, Ashley Call - Jo Call, J’Lynne Collins - Brad and Misti Deaton, Reese Conlon - John and Brandy Conlon, Kaleigh Copeland - Jon and Crystal Copeland, Emmi Jordan - Josh and Kayce Jordan, Emmy McCamant - Keith and Barbara Hunt, Chaslyn Wardrup - Chris and Stacy Mars, Manager Alea Minter - Stan and Terri Minter; and eleventh grade students: Pacey Ford - Amy Ford and Matt Ford, Presley Mc-Cormick, Justin and Kelly Finney, Keeley Nickolson Jeff and Katrina Nickolson, Ainsley Trantham - Dusty and Ashley Trantham, Aaliyah Traylor - Michael and Alisha Traylor.

The cheer teams will start the summer with their first home camp Monday through Friday, May 29 June 2. The guest instructor will be Chris Henson, owner of Express Cheer and Bravo Spirit Events. Towards the end of July the three squads will have a Universal Cheerleaders Association home camp Thursday and Friday, July 20 and 21. Supporters should mark their calendars now for attending the 2024 UIL Spirit State Championship Jan. 4-6.

“The school district will still be on Christmas break; so, there is no excuse for everyone to not be there,” said Coach Cunningham. “We have an amazing group of young ladies and I am looking forward to an exciting year.”
