Tiger baseball finishes third in District

The Mount Vernon High School varsity baseball team will head into the playoffs with a solid third place finish in District 13-3A.

The Tigers won over the Harmony Eagles to secure the finish last Friday, but fell to the Winnsboro Red Raiders Tuesday night, missing a possible second place finish.

Harmony is first, Winnsboro second. Quitman and Mineola were tied 5-5 until the Dawgs beat the Yellowjackets Tuesday night for fourth place.

Predictions for the bi-district playoff for the Tigers pits them against the Atlanta Rabbits, according to MVHS Head Baseball Coach Jason Keeney.

The Tigers have one more regular season game Friday April 28. Mount Vernon will host Mineola for both junior varsity and varsity games at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Mount Vernon won over the Harmony Eagles 4-2 with a slow start but gained the lead late in the sixth inning. Mason Pope singled on the second pitch to score Brylon Bolin from third, and advanced Cade Monroe who had also singled to third. Halen Miller singled and scored Monroe. Tyler Reynolds singled to score, bringing home Pope. The inning closed Tiger 4, Eagles 1.

The Eagles’ other score came in the bottom of the sixth, with two out, when Johnson doubled on a fly ball and scored a runner from second base.

Pope, Bolin, and Monroe each had two hits to lead the team. Bolin also had two of the teams five stolen bases. Reynolds went all seven innings allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out six and no walks.

Mount Vernon fell to Winnsboro 5-3 after the Red Raiders made a comeback after trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning. Pope drove in the first run with a double in the first inning and Bolin and Landry Moss brought in the other two runs in the fourth inning.Carsen Summerlin was two for three at the plate to lead the Tigers’ hitting.
