Tiger Varsity Baseball team are tied for third

The Mount Vernon High School Varsity Tiger Baseball team is currently tied for third in district play with a season record of 11-11 and a district record of 4-3.

“We have not locked in a playoff spot yet, but we are hopeful to do so,” said Jason Keeney, head baseball coach.

The team split their last two games with a 5-4 win against the Mineola Yellowjackets and a12-2 loss to the Quitman Bulldogs last Thursday.

The Tigers scored one run in the first and fifth innings against Quitman. The Dawgs scored one in the first two in the third, fourth and seventh, and five in the sixth innings.

Mount Vernon managed five hits and one RBI. The RBI was from a groundout by Kam Doss. Ryder Bowers led the team with two hits in three at bats.

Mount Vernon spread their five runs out over four innings, with one in the first, fourth and sixth innings and two in the second inning. With bases loaded, Cade Monroe drew a walk to bring in a run for the Tigers in the fourth inning. Ryder Bowers, Kam Doss and Brylon Bolin had two hits apiece to lead the team. Monroe led the Tigers with five stolen bases of the 11 collected by the team.

Tyler Reynolds earned the win on the mound going six innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four. Bowers threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

The Tigers will travel to Chapel Hill Friday for a game at 7 p.m. and back on the road Saturday for a practice game at Van at 11 a.m. They will host Winona for a game at 7 p.m. and Senior Night recognitions, which will be pregame around 6:45 p.m.
