As a Hopkins County pastor years ago, I lived down the road from Mount Vernon High School graduate, Gary Borden. To conclude one of our occasional and somewhat- theological discussions, he recited a cemetery epitaph allegedly collected by a sailor in Tasmania. Miss Irene Binion had taught it to her senior students: “Stop ye travelers as you pass by. / As you are now, so once was I. / As I am now, soon you shall be. / Prepare yourself to follow me.”

Germany is full of good surprises

Everywhere we went in Germany people apologized for what the Nazis did. It started with the cruise director on the ship as we cruised along the Rhine last March. He praised the American forces for the victory in World War II. It continued with every tour guide we encountered. They emphasized the fact that the Holocaust was being taught in schools to help prevent it from happening again.

The need to succeed

Out of the Winnsboro High School Class of 2023 came many exceptional students, especially Katie Garner. Graduating high school in just three years and entering college at University of Texas at Tyler as a junior to study nursing in the fall, Katie knows her road to success was paved through hard work, determination and faith.

When our friends Amber and her hubby Joe moved near us in San Antonio, we got together for dinner. After dinner, Amber would bring out a thoughtful dessert, the kids would each grab their serving, and then they’d head to bed while us four adults stayed up late. These were some of my favorite nights.
