The 2023 Summer All-Star baseball and softball season is well underway for Franklin County All Star teams. There will be four All-Star district tournaments being played this weekend, one in Mount Vernon, one in Detroit and two in Bonham.

Summer workouts for Mount Vernon Independent District athletes began this week, and will continue through July 28 with a break the week of Independence Day. “There are no elevators to success.

The Franklin County Youth Soccer Association began its free Summer Soccer Clinics this week with two more dates scheduled for other age groups. The Under Eight and Under 10 age divisions went through skills training, meeting other players, signing up for the fall season and just plain fun stuff earlier this week.

Ten members of the Sulphur Bluff High School Semi-Final Qualifying Varsity Bear Baseball team were named in the District 18-2A/1A All-District Baseball honors list for the 2023 season. Three were named to the First All-District Team, including pitcher Brody Gunn, a junior, infielder Brock Gunn, a sophomore, and catcher Gavin Brazell, a junior.

Twelve of the Mount Vernon High School Varsity Tiger Softball team were honored in the 2023 All-District selections for University Interscholastic League District 13 3A. Included in the twelve were three of the district’s “superlative” honors for Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

Ten members of the Mount Vernon High School Varsity Tiger Baseball team were honored in All-District selections post season for 2023. Six were selected to the District 13 3A First Team All-District.

The Rugged Red placed three baseball players with superlative honors on the District 13-3A All-District honors list. Junior shortstop Skeet Brumley earned defensive MVP while freshman third baseman Nolee Carroll picked up newcomer of the year and freshman outfielder Camden Capehart captured freshman of the year accolades.
