Lady Tigers split home games to open district play

The Mount Vernon volleyball team lost their district opener Friday to Mineola before beating Winona Tuesday night.The Yellowjackets and Tigers exchanged the lead several times in set one. A late spur found Mount Vernon up 24-21, but after several kills by Mineloa’s Mahayla Mc-Mahon found the teams tied at 25 and McMahon was there again to finish up set one, 2826.McMahon’s 24 total kills on the night were answered only by Lady Tigers’ Aaliyah Traylor. Traylor had 21 kills on the night, several coming in set two. Traylor’s kills, combined with a few from Maggie Lowery, helped push the Lady Tigers out to 6-point lead and then capped set two, 25-18. Lowery finished with seven kills on the night as the Lady Tigers’ second leading scorer. The Lady Yellowjackets jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set three before the Lady Tigers realized what happened. Despite digging in, Mount Vernon couldn’t cut back into the lead as set three finished 25-15.Set four was almost as close as set one. Lady Yellowjackets jumped out to a three-point lead and held on to the entire set to finish it 25-22 with a kill by Mineola’s Jadelyn Marshall.After the four-set loss, the Lady Tigers came out hungry for a win Tuesday night and beat Winona convincingly by double digits in a short threeset game, 25-7, 25-2 and 25-8.Kamryn Bolin showcased her skill as she helped spur start off set one with several aces, seven as the Lady Tigers leader on the night, and a kill. Lady Tigers Maggie Lowery and Carsyn Sparks also picked up a half dozen kills with Traylor leading with 10.Mount Vernon was to play Thursday at Chapel Hill High School before returning home to host Harmony on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.The Lady Tigers will again face off with the Lady Yellowjackets Tuesday, October 10 in Mineola at 6:30p.m.

Running Raiders: Boys Take Top Spot at Lone Oak

The Red Raiders cross country varsity boys captured the top spot at Saturday’s Bradon Lynch Memorial at Lone Oak. Brandon Dunavant earned gold with a time of 17 minutes, 13 seconds on the 5K course. Also in the top five finishers were Joseph Nguyen (fourth) and Taylor Whitehurst (fifth). Adriano Trigoso, who placed 16th, and Brennan Griffin (20th) rounded the team score of 34 points. Aaron Blaser (38th) and Josh Mumby (47th) also competed.
